If you've ever ordered a replacement key for a cabinet lock and ended up with the wrong one, you're not alone. Yitailock produces all three of the most common industrial key types — square keys, triangle keys, and double-bit keys — and while they might look interchangeable at a glance, each has its own typical applications. Here's a straightforward breakdown.

The triangle key is probably the most widely used across electrical enclosures, distribution boxes, and metering cabinets. Its three-sided profile fits the triangle lock cylinder that's become something of a standard in the power and utilities sector. If you're working with meter boxes or street-side distribution enclosures, there's a good chance a triangle key is already what's in use.
The square key follows a similar logic but tends to appear in control cabinets, switchgear enclosures, and industrial equipment panels. The four-sided profile offers a slightly more secure fit than a triangle in some cylinder designs, which is part of why it's common in settings where access control matters a bit more.
The double-bit key has a more distinctive profile — two symmetrical cuts along the blade — and is often found in telecom cabinets, network enclosures, and other equipment where a less common key type adds a basic layer of access restriction.
For locks of a similar size, if the cylinder accepts a triangle, square, or double-bit profile, the keys within that size range are generally interchangeable across compatible locks. It's only when the lock itself is physically larger that a correspondingly larger key is needed. This makes standardizing across a facility more manageable than it might initially seem — as long as the cylinder type and size are consistent, one key can often cover multiple cabinets.
Each key type comes in a few material finishes worth knowing before ordering.
Triangle keys are available in matte zinc alloy, matte aluminum alloy with nickel plating, and matte stainless steel. Square keys come in chrome-plated zinc alloy and matte stainless steel. Double-bit keys are offered in matte aluminum alloy with nickel plating, matte zinc alloy, and matte stainless steel.
Across all three types, stainless steel is the better pick for outdoor installations or anywhere with regular moisture exposure. For standard indoor cabinet use, zinc alloy or aluminum alloy covers most situations well.
