Here's a straightforward way to think through the decision.
Galvanized carbon steel is the workhorse of the industrial cabinet hardware world. It's cost-effective, strong, and widely available — which is why it's the default material on the majority of distribution boxes and control cabinets built for indoor use. The galvanized finish gives it decent corrosion protection in dry, climate-controlled environments, and for most standard indoor installations it will last the full life of the enclosure without any issues.
Where it starts to struggle is in anything damp. Humid utility rooms, outdoor enclosures, coastal installations, and environments where the cabinet gets exposed to condensation or cleaning chemicals will eventually work through the galvanized layer. Once that happens, rust follows fairly quickly.
304 stainless steel costs more, but it doesn't need a surface coating to resist corrosion — the material itself handles it. That makes it the right call for outdoor switchgear, enclosures in food processing or pharmaceutical facilities, marine environments, and anywhere humidity is a persistent factor rather than an occasional one.
It's also worth specifying stainless when the cabinet exterior appearance matters long-term. Galvanized carbon steel can discolour over time in challenging conditions; stainless holds its surface finish considerably better.
Indoor, dry, standard industrial environment — carbon steel is fine and the cost saving is real. Outdoor, humid, corrosive, or appearance-sensitive — stainless steel is the better investment. When in doubt about the environment, stainless is the safer spec.
